Central Government Approves 50 Cities For Making Solar Cities

The Master plans to develop 50 solar cities was approved by Ministry of New and Renewable energy.

Out of 60 cities 50 cities got sanctions that includes New Delhi, Agra, Chandigarh, Bhopal, Kochi (Kerala), Coimbatore (Tamilnadu), Amritsar (Punjab), Howrah, Vijayawada, Bilaspur and Raipur (Chhattisgarh), Rajkot, Gandhinagar, Surat (Gujarat), Panji city (Goa), Gurgaon, Faridabad (Haryana), Shimla, Nagpur etc.

0n 2009, 26 consultants was appointed to prepare master plans for the cities.

For 46 cities master plan is prepared. Further in-principle approval was given to five cities including Jaipur, Leh, Indore, Mahabuhnagar and Thiruvanandhapuram.

The Ministry said 8 cities will be developed as the Model Solar Cities and selected Nagpur, Chandigarh, Gandhinagar, Mysore so far. Out of 50 cities 15 cities will be developed as Pilot Solar City in which 13 cities were named including Agartala, Coimbatore, Rajkot, Shimla, Faridabad, Thane, Raipur, Shirdi, Leh, Aizawl, Puducherry, Vijaywada and Amritsar.

North East Cities

In North East six cities were selected for this project. Guwahati and Jorhat (Assam), Kohima and Dinapur (Nagaland), Itanagar (Arunachal Pradesh), and Agartala (Tripura) are the cities selected to change for non conventional energy.

Tripura's Agartala

Already in North East State Tripura, capital Agartala city was selected and planned for the conversion of the city to solar power by the state government.  

Changing from conventional energy to non conventional energy is the only possibility to meet the demand said the state government of Tripura. In the North east region, Agartala city would be first city to become a solar city in few years.  Tripura government is taking many steps to create awareness of solar power in the state. Agartala is replacing Sodium vapor lamps and other lamps by LED street lights that could save 40% of energy say the Tripura government.

Next to Hyderabad, Kolkatta and Vijayawada, Agartala is using LED lighting systems.

People began to install solar panels for their home use. Many people are still backing because of its steeper price. The buyers of the solar panel say this could be power and money saving in the long run, if the initial cost is reduced many people will install the solar panels and it would save the electricity and money.
