High Court Permits Pepsi And Coke Companies To Take Water From Thamirabarani
Madurai high court today lifted the ban and permitted PepsiCo and Coca-Cola companies to use water from River Thamirabarani. The court ordered on November 2016 a stay for companies producing Pepsi and Coca cola to use water from the river. The stay was given after the intense protest of farmers and villagers in the surroundings. The people in the region had been facing severe water shortages.
As feared now the judges had changed the order and permitted those companies to use the water. The coco-cola company has permission to draw 18 lakh litres per day and PepsiCo can draw 10 lakh litres every day.
This river is the main source of drinking water for Tuticorine and Nellai districts. People in Nellai district alone needed 12.5 crore litres per day and in the rest of regions like Ramanathapuram, Tuticorine need at least 10 crore litres per day.
Social activists and people in the region are strongly agitating the water for these companies. In the water scarcity, if the companies takes water it adversely affects the people and agriculture say the experts.
The environmental and social activists got into the river to show their protest against the high court order.
