Madras HC Ordered Madurai Corporation To Remove Karuvelam Trees
The Madras High Court had ordered Madurai Corporation to uproot Karuvelam trees that are rooted strong in 13 districts. On the public interest litigation filed by former Mayor M Patturajan seeking to remove the Karuvelam trees across the districts to save ground water and growth of other trees.
The court also ordered to the district commissioner that notice should be issued to the private landowners where prosopis juliflora (Karuvelam trees) are grown.
It is a harmful tree that emits very less amount of oxygen and higher toxins in the atmosphere. It sucks the underground water and turns the land dry. It will not allow any shrubs or trees nearby to grow. It poisons the surrounding areas and water. The court stated the tree seeds, leaves are not useful for humans. Moreover it causes harms to cattle that are being tied with it. It was reported animals are suffer from infertility and birth deformities when they tied in that tree.
The court stated the trees were completed destroyed in Kerala and insisted everyone should uproot at least one Karuvelam tree. It is one of the reasons for Kerala's greenery. They totally avoided this tree but Tamils are growing it for the wood. This is one of the main reasons that lead to the drought condition of the state.
Mexico, South America and the Caribbean are native place for Prosopis Juliflora. This tree gets the first place in America's poisonous trees list. They cleverly said good bye to this kind of trees. We Indians should save the nation be uprooting these trees totally across the country.
