Sri Lanka Released 51 Indian Fishermen

Sri Lanka today released 51 fishermen of Tamil Nadu, India. Earlier Tamil Nadu Chief Minister O Panneerselvam appealed to Prime Minister Modi to take immediate steps to release fishermen arrested by Sri Lankan Navy. Recently 10 fishermen from Pudukottai district were arrested by Lankan navy.

CM Panneerselvam had requested Modi to secure the release of 61 fishermen and 116 boats immediately.

The release of 51 fishermen was announced January 2nd and the arrest of new 10 fishermen comes after 3 days of announcement.

Last month Chief minister submitted memorandum to Modi seeking a financial package of Rs 1,650 crore including a recurring grant of Rs 10 crore to improve the status of fishermen in coastal districts of Palk Bay.
