Tamil Nadu Farmer Protest At Jantar Mantar Delhi
Demanding the loan waiver, special compensation packages and river inter-linking project Tamil Nadu farmer staged protest near Jantar Mantar in New Delhi. Over 150 farmers from Karur, Thanjavur, and Trichy districts are participating in the protest wearing a garland of skulls to show their anguish. They demand meeting with Prime Minister Narendra Modi regarding this. They also want to meet Finance Minister Arun Jaitley and Agricultural Minister Radha Mohan to convey their demands.
They have decided for the infinite hunger strike until they demand is fulfilled. Two of the young men from their team tried to hang themselves and was stopped by fire service personnel. The police reached them to avoid unfortunate incidents.
They started the protest 3 days ago and as the 3rd day yesterday some of them became tried and fainted. They were taken to hospital and on returned again involved in the strike. They do not have any basic facilities even water is not provided to them. They sleep by the road side saying their protest will continue till their death.
Ayyakannu, the head of the protesters says 'In Tamil Nadu there is a drought condition for past 10 successive years and last 2 years it was very severe. Many farmers committed suicide because of crop failure. We do not have anything to eat and some of us survived by eating rat and snakes.'
They say the skulls in their hands and necks belong to their loved ones who committed suicide in past years. They are waiting with empty bowls for the attention of central government. They also warn if their demand is not heard they would commit mass suicide in the place.
