Tamil Nadu Farmers Death In A Month
Tamil Nadu farmers’ death has been increasing very fast in last two months. Most of the farmers were committed suicide due to crop failure. As per the reports at least 106 farmers were died in one month alone. In one day alone on New Year 9 farmers lost their lives. In the first day of the year 2017 47-year-old farmer Panneerselvam in Nagapattinam district killed himself for Rs. 35000 debt. He had taken 2 acres for lease and could not take income due to insufficient water.
The northwest monsoon had been short by 62 percent this year and due to Cauvery crisis the state is facing drought condition. Many districts are dried due to inadequate rainfall. Several minister and opposition leaders are urging centre to announce Tamil Nadu as drought hit state.
Tamil Nadu Chief Minister O Panneerselvan had promised compensation of Rs. 25000 for the famers died due to crop failure.
Four farmers died in heart attack on Tuesday in Thiruvarur and Nagapattinam districts. The death rate increases drastically. Farmers who suffered from depressions due to lack of rain and crop failure had died in several places in the state.
The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) sent notice to Tamil Nadu government on Thursday regarding the farmers’ death continuing in the state. It demanded report regarding 106 farmer’s death and causes during the period of one month.
NHRC notice states 'The National Human Rights Commission has taken suo motu cognizance of media reports regarding the deaths of 106 farmers during a period of one month in Tamil Nadu which it considers as a matter of concern. It has issued a notice to the Chief Secretary, Government of Tamil Nadu calling a detailed report in the matter within six weeks. He has been asked to also inform about the steps taken or proposed to be taken by the State Government.'
