Mariyappan Thangavelu Wins Gold At Rio Paralympics
It was the time for India to celebrate this Saturday with Mariyappan Thangavelu Gold and Varun Singh Bhati Bronze medals at Rio Paralympics. Mariyappan won gold in the men’s high jump T-42 event while Varun Bhati won Bronze at the same event.
Mariyappan created history by becoming a first Indian to win Gold medal at Paralympics. He won the gold medal with the best jump of 1.89 meters while Bhati made 1.86 meters jump. USA athlete Sam Grewe won the silver medal.
India's another athlete Sharad Kumar finished six by jumping 1.77 meters. India's Paralympics gold medalist will be awarded with Rs. 75 lakh and bronze medalist with Rs. 30 lakh as announced earlier by the sports ministry.
Indian Anthem was played at Rio de Janeiro when Mariappan won the gold and Varun won bronze. Prime Minister Narendra Modi and other leaders praised them on their twitter handle.
