India's PU Chitra Wins Gold Medal In Asian Athletics Championships 2017
It was a mind-blowing finishing of India’s PU Chitra in women’s 1500 meters at the Asian Athletics Championships held at Bhuvaneshwar, Odisha. Chitra had been earlier excluded from Indian team for World Athletics Championships that will be held next month. India made history winning 29 medals in 22nd Asian Athletics Championship 2017 including 12 gold.
Exclusion of Chitra in world championships had become emotive issue in her home state. After her gold medal winning Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan said in his Facebook 'Excluding Chitra, pride of not only of Kerala but also of the country, from the team for World Athletics Championship is condemnable.'
Twenty-two-year-old Chitra is from small village near Mundur, Palakkad district, Kerala. She completed with the time of 4.17.92 seconds. She made everyone stunning with her performance.
The AFI had announced 28-member squad for World Athletics Championships including 10 women.
Besides Chitra, Ajau Kumar Saroj won gold in men's 1500 m and Sudha Singh won gold in women's 3000 m steeplechase champion. These champions were also excluded from the squad.
IAAF members say 'The selection is based on the qualifying standards and performance of the athletes and there is no guarantee that Asian Championships winner gets entry.'
