BSNL, the fifth largest mobile telephony provider in India offers 4GB Data per day valid for 30 days at Rs. 379 and the mobile subscriber gets a total of 120 GB Data for a month with other benefits such as voice calls. The new BSNL plan has been officially announced only in Kerala and the benefits may differ when it is implemented in other telecom circles. The state-run telecom company has taken this move to overcome the trending mobile operator Reliance Jio's Rs. 509 tariff plan.
Currently, Jio's 509 plan offers 4GB data per day valid for 28 days. Overall, a mobile user could use only 112 GB data for 28 days with unlimited voice calls (also in roaming), unlimited SMS (100/day) for the entire 28 days.
When comparing Jio's 509 plan with the latest BSNL 379 prepaid plan, BSNL is offering its plan with Rs. 200 cost difference and also increased its plan validity period from normal 28 days to 30 days. These two benefits are the major advantages of the BSNL's 379 plan.
But, when data speed is taken into account, Jio's speed is comparatively higher than BSNL. The reason for high data speed in Jio is due to its 4G VoLTE network services while other mobile operators are still using 4G network services and Airtel has been testing their VoLTE network in main cities recently.
Also, BSNL does not provide any SMS benefits like Jio and offers unlimited calls only for BSNL to BSNL service and outgoing voice calls are limited to 30 minutes per day for BSNL to other networks.
Earlier this month, Vodafone had launched a 549 plan to counter Jio's plans. Vodafone 549 plan offers 3.5 GB data per day with a total of 98 GB data valid for 28 days and providing SMS and voice call benefits limited to 250 minutes per day and 1000 minutes per week. Also, this plan is currently available only in selected telecom circles only.
